Cisco licensing has always offered a perpetual licensing approach in which you buy once and maintain the license for the life of the device. When that hardware is replaced, the license becomes obsolete, and the new gear requires its own set of licenses (s). If you RMA the device, you may be eligible for a one-time transfer of that license to the new hardware, but that is the exception rather than the rule. This applies to all hardware.

The software features that you purchase in addition to the hardware are licensed separately and require their own maintenance contract. You’ll need a software license or entitlement to enable the IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) capability on your firewall. As a result, a single device will have two support contracts connected with it. One for the hardware failure and the underlying operating system, and another for the IPS-specific software support and upgrades.
